The
Flagler Museum
- If you’re going to see a museum in Palm Beach, why not
see how it all got started in Palm Beach. Pioneer, Henry Morrison
Flagler was a United States tycoon, real estate promoter, railroad
developer and Rockefeller partner in standard oil. He was a key
figure in the development of the eastern coast of Florida along
the Atlantic Ocean and was founder of what became the Florida
East Coast Railway. Henry Flagler's Railway and the luxury hotels
built along the way linked the entire east coast of Florida, establishing
agriculture and tourism as the state's leading industries and
Palm Beach as a world-renowned winter resort. When it was completed
in 1902, Whitehall, Flagler's gilded age estate in Palm Beach
was hailed by the New York Herald as "more wonderful than
any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other
private dwelling in the world." Today, Whitehall is open
to the public as the Flagler Museum and features guided tours,
Flagler's private railcar, exhibits and special programs. Make
sure to visit their museum store and cafe.
Located at 1 Whitewall Way in Palm Beach.

a Japanese Museum & Garden
| Morikami
Museum and Japanese Gardens - In the early 1900's,
George Sukeji Morikami joined a group of Japanese immigrants in
settling the land now known as Boca Raton. Though most of the other
settlers eventually left (due to the hardships of the early Florida
life), Morikami stayed, continuing his farming efforts, he donated
his property to the county in the 70's for development to the honor
and remember the original Japanese settlers. The Morikami Museum
and Japanese Gardens, a cultural oasis featuring aspects of traditional
Japanese lifestyle, opened in 1977. Visitors can appreciate Japanese
art, witness a tea ceremony, or peruse the Yamato-kan (modeled after
the design of a Japanese villa). Head outdoors to wander the 200

Explore
a Presidential Bomb Shelter
President
Kennedys Bomb Shelter - See where President John F.
Kennedys Bomb Shelter is on Peanut Island. During the Cuban
Missile Crisis, the Seabees secretly and very quickly built
a bunker for the President, who spent a great deal of time at
the Kennedy compound here in Palm Beach. Although it would have
been a temporary command center for the nation in a time of
crisis, it is still relatively small. It was constructed adjacent
to the U.S. Coast Guard Station, about 100 yards away, concealed
in the woods, underground, but above the water table. Now the
Bomb Shelter is open to the public for tours. If you would like
to tour the facility you must take a water taxi ride to get
there.
Tours are 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on the half hour Saturdays
& Sundays.
